DIGITAL NOMAD VISA
Get residency and Live and Work in Bulgaria Legally as a Digital Nomad
Who is a Digital nomad (according to the Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria Act)?
From June 27, 2025, Bulgaria officially introduces the long-awaited Digital Nomad Visa – your gateway to living and working remotely in the EU while enjoying the affordability and beauty of Bulgaria.
The Foreigners Act has been amended to allow non-EU citizens who work remotely for a foreign employer or run their own business abroad to apply for a long-term residence permit in Bulgaria.
This is ideal for:
-
IT professionals
-
Entrepreneurs
-
Freelancers
-
Digital creators
-
Remote employees
To get this type of residence permit, the applicant must prove that you have enough financial means to support yourself. More specifically, there is a need to show evidence of an average income of at least 50 times the minimum monthly wage in Bulgaria (according to the Bulgaria legilsation for the past year). For example the minimal monthly wage for 2025 was 551 EUR, a digital nomad needs to show at least 27 550 EUR average annual income.
In addition, the applicant must fall into one of the following legally defined categories:
1. Remote employee of a non-EU company
You are employed under an employment contract with an employer registered outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland, and you perform your duties entirely remotely using information technologies.
If your employment contract is fixed-term, its remaining duration must be at least equal to the validity period of the requested residence permit.
2. Owner or manager of a non-EU company
You are a:
-
legal representative,
-
member of a management body,
-
partner or shareholder holding more than 25% of the company’s capital,
in a company registered outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland, through which you provide remote services only.
You must not perform work or provide services to individuals or companies located in Bulgaria.
3. Independent remote professional
You provide remote services in your personal capacity (self-employed or freelance) using information technologies and:
-
have done so for at least one year before applying, and
-
do not perform work or freelance activities in Bulgaria, nor provide services to Bulgarian clients.
If your professional situation fits any of the above categories, the Digital Nomad residence permit offers a clear and fully legal path to live in Bulgaria while continuing your international work.
